Asus VivoBook X202E

Ever since the launch of Windows 8 there has been an increase in touch sensitive devices and laptops including devices that double up as tablets/laptops too. Asus too has come out with a touch-enabled laptop called Asus VivoBook X202E. Let us find out more about it.

Physical form and Features

VivoBook is the latest addition and it is said to be way different than any of its predecessors. It has a brushed metallic layer at the top of the device covering the lid and the body has a plastic finish. It weighs at 3 pounds and measures 0.8 inch in thickness. Screen size is 11 inches. The chassis of this ultraportable laptop is small in size including a small keyboard and a large touch pad to easily work with.

The keyboard is in island style, the keys are small when compared to any other 13 inch laptop with relatively bigger keys. It will take time for you to get used to small keys. However, Enter, Shift, Backspace keys are bigger to enable easy navigation. Other keys such as Function keys, media keys including volume and brightness control can be enabled by pressing Fn+F.

The Asus Vivobook X202E is large in size but lacks the right and left mouse click separately. Another thing that might bother you is its difficulty to respond to touch especially while using two fingers for scrolling in documents and navigating through Web pages. Navigating through the tiled look in Windows 8 is however easy.

The display measures 11.6-inch with a resolution of 1,366x768-pixels. It is a bit low for a modern age laptop like Asus VivoBook X202E. Additionally, the overlay of edges with glass and the bezel makes the screen appear small in size. Nonetheless, the screen is highly touch sensitive and the display is impressive at any given viewing angle.

Connections, performance and battery

The Asus VivoBook X202E has the option of three inbuilt USB ports. One is a jack for Ethernet while the other two facilitates video output. The only thing that is annoying is that only one USB port is enabled with 3.0 speed. The laptop is powered with Intel Core i3 CPU with a good performance, you can easily perform various functions like streaming videos, web browsing and social networking. However, you need to be careful in adding multiple windows and downloading apps simultaneously as this might slow down the system.

As far as the battery is concerned you will only be able to get the system running for 3 hours and 29 minutes if you are streaming video playback. This is however not as impressive as compared to the Core i5 laptops that provide with approximately 10 hours of battery backup.

Verdict

Incorporating the touch-screen capability with Windows 8 laptops along with the pricing of $500 is impressive. Other things like the portability factor, form factor along with the Windows 8 OS Asus VivoBook X202E is a good deal. However, you need to watch out for battery life, USB input options quality and performance.
