How to Help Prevent Junking Up Your Computer

My technicians and I work on a lot of client computers. Our goal is to always have those computers that we support working in their tip top shape. Sometimes what our computer support team discovers can really slow down the computer, cause computer issues and errors and can just clutter the computer screen. This article helps address some of the issues we find and shows how to correct or prevent them from happening.

Junk Programs Installed

We define a junk program as a piece of software that gets installed on your computer my accident (most of the time) that doesn't need to be installed and is serving you no purpose on being on your computer. Some of these programs try and accomplish what another program or Windows itself is already doing. This can cause role conflicts, errors, or slow down the computer. Some of these programs get installed when you are trying to install a different program.

An example would be Google Toolbar. For most people running Windows 7, this is a redundant program and simply makes your internet browser load more slowly and can cause internet browsing problems. This is a popular program that also gets installed when installing other programs such as Adobe Reader. If you go to the download page for Adobe Reader, Adobe tries to sneak in Google Chrome and Google Toolbar automatically. You have to read closely and uncheck the box so that it is not automatically installed.

Some other programs try to install McAfee Security Scan Plus. This software simply tells you if you antivirus program is not up-to-date, firewall is turned off and other alerts. This is already done by your antivirus program itself and Windows. No need for this program to be installed.

Even brand new computers can have junk programs included with them. When you buy a Lenovo, HP and other computers, they will usually include a lot of non-needed programs. These programs start when Windows loads and can conflict with other programs and simply slow down the computer.

Removing these junk programs can really help your Windows experience. If you know which programs are needed and which ones are not, you can simply go to your Add and Remove programs (Windows XP) or Programs and Features (Windows 7) and uninstall ones you do not need. You can also use the msconfig command from the Run window and tell programs not to load when Windows starts. You then simply run them when you need them.

2. What am I going to use it for? You need a lot more power to play online games such as World of Warcraft than you do to write a letter in Microsoft Word. Decide what you will use it for first and then pick a computer that fits that need. Remember that they make computers specifically for gaming. They are high powered computers with expensive video and sound cards and a lot of processing power. You don't need all that to check the news your standard desktop computer will do just fine.

3. How much money do I have to spend? This determines everything! You can get a desktop computer for $300 if you want. These are perfectly good computers. They probably won't play your online role playing game, but they are good for surfing the web and doing some word processing. On the other extreme you can spend $2000, $3000 or even $5000 on a brand new system that does everything and will play any game you throw at it. So decide whether you're getting a laptop or a desktop and what your intended usage is and then pick a budget that fits your needs.

4. How do I pick once I've narrowed down my choices?

a. Look at processing power first. We are up to iCore7 and counting. You may not need an iCore7 for your purposes now, but if you can afford a little extra juice it will help extend the life of your computer.

b. Then look at the amount of RAM you need. I suggest no less than 4 GB of RAM. Make sure the computer will handle at least 6 or 8 GB though. This gives you some upgrade room when you need it.

c. Now decide how much storage you need. Most computers come with at least 200 or 300 GB now and many with much more than that. Storage space is easy to expand as needed with external hard drives and USB thumb drives so it's not a crisis if your hard drive is a little small.

d. Lastly look at the extras like DVD burners, a fancy mouse or keyboard, video cards and sound cards. Unless you're watching a lot of movies or listening to a lot of music or playing those games we talked about, the video card and sound card that are in the computer will be fine. Often these are referred to as "onboard video" or "onboard sound." All that means is that they are part of the motherboard, not an extra card like you can buy at any computer store.

When you finally decide on a computer make sure you have all of the cables you need to hook up your monitor and printer if you have one. Keep the receipt in case it doesn't work for some reason or you're missing pieces and make sure you keep the box for a while. Often the box is your warranty. Many manufacturers require you to send the computer back in the original box for repair if it's needed. Once the warranty period ends you can throw out the box.

Removing an Operating System From a Dual - Boot Setup

Having two operating systems in your computer can be fun. You get tired of one and you reboot your computer and switch to another. But what happens when you get tired of one or the other or you simply want to go back to just one? Here's how you remove an operating system when you're done with it.

When you installed the second operating system you had to partition your hard drive or divide the drive into at least 2 sections. This makes removing the one you don't want relatively simple.

1. Boot your computer into the operating system you want to keep.

2. Make sure all your files are backed up from all partitions. Heaven forbid something happens and you end up starting over entirely. Make sure you have a way to install an operating system, preferably the one you want to keep, in case you end up formatting the entire hard drive.

3. Assuming you are in some version of Windows, you'll be able to go to the disk manager and use it to format the partition the other operating system is on. Remember that when you format you erase everything. If it wasn't backed up it's been deleted permanently. To get to the Disk Manager go into your Start Menu and click on the Control Panel. Go into System and Security and then into the Administrative Tools. From there you will find the Computer Management or Disk Management Tools. Right click and format the correct drive. Fortunately it won't let you format the drive you're using. If you make a mistake doing this, the worst thing that will happen is you will format your backup drive. If the drive is being used as storage space after, format it as NTFS, which will be the same as your Windows drive.

4. As for the boot loader that allowed you to pick between operating systems, you may find you need to put in the disk of the remaining operating system and use bootrec.exe to fix the boot loader. Another option is to go to "run" in the Start Menu, type "msconfig", go to the "Boot Tab" and delete the entry you no longer need. There are actually a number of ways to remove unneeded entries from the boot loader, these are just two ways you can use.

5. If you have multiple empty partitions at this point you can use the Disk Manager to merge some of those empty partitions into one bigger partition. You could also install an entirely different operating system at this point. The choice is yours.

This is actually easier to do than formatting and installing was originally. Print this out to help you along the way. Remember not to be afraid of this process. It's fun to play and try new things. As long as you have your files backed up you'll be alright. Have fun!

The Digital Future

Advances in technology produce patterns in the communities with which they interact and into which they become assimilated. Some facet of life is replaced, enhanced, or altered forever, sometimes for the worse. Our ability to predict which of these paths the advance will take in our lives never seems to improve. What looks on the face of it like a huge benefit to society often turns out to be not quite as beneficial, in varying degrees.

The advent of the television into our lives, for example, gave us an opportunity to disseminate information, to educate the masses, and to entertain.

However, the television, it has been said, is largely responsible for the atomization of society, the breakdown of family ties and traditional forms of entertainment in the home, and worse, the spreading of ideas detrimental to the well being of society in general. None of this was foreseen when John Logie Baird's flickering images first entered our lives.

Where formal education is concerned, the 'digital future' is already upon us. The Internet, we are constantly told, promises to revolutionize education, the laptop computer will enter classrooms changing forever the dynamics between teacher and students.

There is no doubt in many people's minds that these advances have indeed the potential to radically alter the way we educate our children, and ourselves.

If, however, these particular advances in technology follow the patterns outlined above, the benefits might be outnumbered by the detrimental effects on our lives as educators and as learners. If computers are going to enter the classroom, will they enhance, replace, or change forever what traditionally goes on inside them? Or will they have an effect none of us could have predicted beforehand?

Before such advances are transferred into our lives in the classroom, our motives for wanting such changes should first be examined. Then the things that already happen in the classroom should be considered in order to ascertain whether in fact we want to change them. Do we, for example, want to replace the interaction between teacher and student, and that between fellow students with something else? Do we want to reduce the importance of books in teaching? Do we want to alter the individual's private domain? And last but certainly not least, are we able to say with any degree of certainty whether these changes will be controlled ones?

The persons usually charged with responsibilities in the decision making process when considering whether or not to adopt such technology in classrooms are often found to be those people least affected by the changes they so eagerly and persuasively propose.

Technological determinism is not and does not have to be the route educational establishments take, and yet it often is. Having a modern outlook, or just keeping up with new technology, are all poor reasons masquerading as good ones when it comes to the way we talk ourselves into buying new gismos and installing them in places they probably ought not to be.

Consultation, a great deal of thought and research, common sense, and honesty should be the watchwords, rather than ones like fashion and modernity. How we benefit from today's wonderful advances tomorrow will depend on whether we ask the right questions to the right people, and most importantly, whether or not we have the will to say no.

The vexed question of how new technology is going to affect us, however, is not a new one though.

Two questions, I have said, need to be addressed. First, why do we want to introduce technology into our classrooms, and second, do we want to change the things that are already successful in the classroom?

The answer to the first depends to a certain extent upon the answer to the second. Part of the answer must surely be though, because we want to improve the quality of learning, and this will surely have implications for the type of learning too. If the answer is anything less than this wish to improve learning, then we should expect other things to be different.

What goes on in the classroom without digital aids? Teachers teach, and students learn, or at least that's what is supposed to happen. If this new interface replaces existing ones, can it perform the functions necessary for the conditions of learning to be improved? Here we would need to say that technological devices would not necessarily replace all interaction in the classroom.

Of the four language skills taught in our classrooms, it seems to me that reading and writing could well be aided by the introduction of computers. This has already happened in many institutions. What seems to be lacking in many is some sort of check on whether CAL assists learning or not, and if it does, how much and in what particular direction. Does, for example, completing cloze-tests on computer screens improve a student's ability to use that language in his or her own written work. Merely installing what appear to be learning opportunities does not ensure that they are really of value to learning.

The provision of a spell checker on a computer does not really mean that a students ability to spell correctly improves with the use of the device. It may only mean that the learner remembers to activate it at certain intervals in his or her writing. A good thing for one person is not necessarily a good thing for all. Time is saved for those who can already spell, but time is lost for those who cannot. Technological innovations in any field do not of themselves mean improvement in our lives. Remember the TV.

Students' learning styles and teachers' styles of teaching need to be catered for by applications of new technology in education. At present, I think it is fair to say that the former is encouraged by educationalists, while the latter is sometimes actively discouraged. However, if students have different learning styles, then teachers must be both responsive and versatile. Any change in the interface between learner and educator would need to be similarly so. Such versatility and responsiveness should be possible using new technologies in language classrooms. If this does not happen, it will not be the fault of technology but rather the lack of will to want to install such versatility. For this seems to be a feature of current thinking on the issue, that some believe that the introduction of computers in classrooms will enable greater control over what happens in them. I equate control with power, the power to impose one's views on others. If those views do not include a wish to retain diversity among teachers to facilitate diversity among students, the outcome may be an unintended one. Remember the TV.

Keep Your Computer Clean: 7 Tasks in 7 Days

Computers are like closets and drawers. We put things in them and we don't always pay attention to where they go or even what they are. They get cluttered and messy fast and the last thing we want to do is clean them out. But if we do a simple task every day and get into a routine we can help keep our computer clean and running smoothly. Here are 7 daily tasks you can do to get on the path to cleanliness.

Day 1: Clean off your Desktop! The Desktop is where the Start Menu resides. It's also where clutter collects. It's an easy storage space because it's so convenient. But too many icons, shortcuts and files slow your computer down. Clean it up by deleting unwanted shortcuts and icons and moving files and folders to their correct locations.

Day 2: Now it's time to tackle the Documents or My Documents folder. Go through and delete the stuff you don't want and sort out the stuff you do. Putting things in their right spots makes it easier for you to find them when you need them.

Day 3: Here's an easy one, empty your Recycle Bin! It really isn't storage space so remember to empty it on a regular basis. If it's not on your Desktop, right click on your Desktop, go to Personalize and click "Change Desktop Icons". You'll see the option to check off "Recycle Bin". That will put the trash can front and center. Also run the Disk Cleanup utility in your Start Menu under Accessories and System Tools. This will delete all the temporary files you don't need.

Day 4: Back up your important files and folders. You can use a free online drive like SkyDrive (part of Hotmail) or Google Drive (with your Gmail account) or you can use a USB thumb drive or external hard drive. You can even burn a CD or DVD if you want.

Day 5: Now it's time to sort all the pictures, movies and videos. Just create file folders and drag and drop these files into their new homes. These should be backed up as well.

Day 6: Go into your Control Panel and use the Uninstall Programs tool to remove programs you don't use and toolbars you don't need.

Day 7: Now it's time to defragment your hard drive. You'll find this in your Start Menu under the Accessories menu and System Tools. Set this up just before you are done using the computer for the night. Make sure if you're doing this with a laptop, that it's plugged in. Defragmenting will eat your battery power very quickly.

Don't forget to print these steps so you'll have them. If you get into a routine cleaning up your computer won't take very long and you'll be happier because your computer will run faster and more smoothly.
